Broadcast Journalism
Although my natural journalistic gravitation was always toward writing, I have enjoyed being behind the camera as well. There are simply stories that can't be fully told through paper. A visual and audio component to storytelling can often add a new perspective to a story. Personally, when it comes to broadcast, I enjoy being behind the camera in all aspects. For all of the videos showcased on this page, I helped create the content by videotaping, editing or both!
"30,000 educators all over LAUSD strike in efforts to help schools"
United Teachers Los Angeles Teacher Strike - Jan. 14-22, 2019
I was able to wear many hats while reporting on the LAUSD UTLA teacher strike, one of which was videography. Originally, our multimedia editor was supposed to film the first day of the strike for our coverage. However, he was ultimately unable to attend that day. Despite my minimal experience in videography, I had to take over the filming aspect of this story. Trying to keep my hands as steady as possible, I shot some of the footage used in this video.
This video was featured with my article on the Best of School Newspapers Online, which was also chosen as one of the 19 favorite articles out of 2,200 published on Best of SNO in 2018-19.
"SRL students go behind the scenes of the NewsHour POLITICO #DemDebate"
December Democratic Debate - Dec. 19, 2019
In December of 2019, my news publication staff and I were invited to attend a PBS Student Reporting Labs ‘youth watch party’ at Loyola Marymount University on Dec. 19. This watch party was designed to allow teenagers from around Los Angeles watch the December Democratic debate live, right next to where the debate was actually being held. I, along with four other students, was chosen to be a part of the PBS SRL behind the scenes crew. We were tasked with creating a short video and got to go into the media center during the debate. For this video, I helped write the questions, prepare the camera and was the interviewer.
"Annenberg Youth Academy Social Media Activism"
Annenberg Youth Academy - June 2019
During the summer of 2019, I was a part of the Annenberg Youth Academy, a 4-week summer intensive program where 25 Los Angeles students were chosen to learn about journalism and civic engagement in college-level classes. Through this program, a team of students and I worked on a multimedia project that dove into the use of social media for activism, especially by the younger generation. For this project, I conducted the interview, edited the video and came up with questions.

The full interview
My interview with Anna lasted about 15 minutes and we decided to cut the interview down when publishing to make it more easily digestible for our audience. We knew that the full interview offered valuable information, so we included that as well.
"Video: Teachers react to early Valentine’s Day gifts"
The Pearl Post - February 13, 2020
To balance out our more news-heavy content, our staff often enjoys coming out with feel-good pieces for our audience. Our staff member Sara pitched the idea of creating goodie bags to give out to all of our teachers on Valentine's Day. As the videographer, I tried to make sure that I caught their reaction to seeing the gift. Overall, this was a really fun video to make and the teachers really enjoyed it.
